INTERVIEW: The Pipettes

There's something about The Pipettes. It's not just their polka dot endowed dress sense... everyone's getting spotty these days (though they do wear them better than most). It might have something to do with their stunning looks, long legs and synchronized dance moves but I don't think that's it. At the end of a music packed day, it's what our ears are getting that really matters. You see, these three girls are no manufactured pop act. They're sassy, sexy and naturally talented. They prefer a beer down at the local to guest lists and cocktails and let's not forget... they croon a damn fine tune.
As I descend into the deep, dark depths of POP in central London, the girls are sound checking. Julia, Becki and Rose Their lyrics slide over you like fresh new silk sheets and boy is the ride a good one. "Are they gigging tonight?" I ask in surprise (it isn't advertised anywhere). "It's a private gig for a friend's party" their manager tells me. Half their luck.
Even in everyday garb, the girls stun. Some of the girl bands out there look like they're been pressed, molded and shaped ready for a stint at Madame Tussauds. This trio not only avoids such stereotypes, they also blow them out of the water. They're well respected throughout the music industry as bona fide talent and the Indie scene loves them. From what I've seen in the press, reviewers do too. In particular, those with testosterone and dangly bits... funny, that.
The ladies are performing a special pre-Christmas gig at the newly refurbished Roundhouse - a venue and a half and one of my all time favorites (keep your eye on the site for our upcoming 'Venue of the Week feature). As the girls tell me, a typical gig involves "a lot of dancing, laughter, a few mistakes, a lot of dots and audience participation." As we settle down into the slightly sticky seats at the the dimly lit club, I chat to the girls about their upcoming gig, future Pipette fashion brands, wobbly bits and what they really think about being tied to the kitchen sink...
