LOVE COURTNEY
By Zarina Raja
Courtney Love: Junkie, widow of Kurt Cobain, hired a hit man to kill him and used heroin whilst she was pregnant. The former two statements are unfortunately true but the latter two are simply malicious allegations. There is only one word that should come to mind when Courtney is mentioned and that is musician. She may have married Kurt Cobain, lead singer of the legendary Nirvana, but she had her own band as well which is often over looked. Hole are the band that undoubtedly inspired current riot girl bands such as The Gossip led by ultra feisty, feminist and fat Beth Ditto (Fat being a word that Beth happily associated with herself.)
Don't get me wrong, I realize that musically Hole offered slightly less than other bands, especially in the early days, but that doesn't mean Courtney should not be deemed a musician. She taught her self how to play guitar, she got kicked out of some of her best friend's bands but she still barged her way into the spotlight with some of the rarest and inspiring music of the nineties. Hole's first album, 'Pretty On The Inside,' released in 1991 is a grunge drenched record full of raw guitar and attitude. Couple this with Courtney's sexy feminist lyrics such as 'Don't ever talk to me like that again,' I can clearly state Courtney is anything but 'just the girl that married Kurt.'
'Live Through This,' was released in a frenzy of controversy very close after Kurt's death. It followed the same riot girl path that 'Pretty on The Inside' did with lines like 'I don't do the dishes; I throw them in the crib.' One of Hole's most powerful songs 'Violet' is the opening track, throwing her fans into Courtney's angry but determined world, 'Go on take everything I dare you to.' In other words, you can try, but you won't succeed in taking away anything that is Courtney.
By the time Courtney released 'Celebrity Skin' a poppy record peppered by her lingering sadness after Kurt's death, some of her fans had begun to turn on her and call her a sell out. However, Courtney had simply grown up and so had her music. Heavy grunge tracks with no riffs would not be as well received in 99 as it would have been in 91.
After the success of 'Celebrity Skin' Courtney stayed quiet for a few years and came back in 2004 with her solo album which I admittedly have less to say about. But, I remain hopeful. Courtney is back in 2007 with a new album predicted to top her previous work and has been deemed 'remarkable.'
