TURN IT UP, TURN IT UP, TURN IT UP
By Zarina Raja
A Robot in Disguise goes by the name of Sue Denim and Dee Plume. Listening to RID is like crashing a party in your mind, causing a riot and leaving a trail of debris in your wake. Watching the Robots perform is like being at the party combined with lots of noise, lots of silver, two big fringes and a mass of movement. Lyrics from the first track 'Turn it up' on their 2006 album 'Get Rid' rang true as the Robots storm the stage shrieking '...crawled into the speaker and turned up the volume.' They are girls with drum machines, guitars and a sexy British drool that know how to combine quirky songs such as 'She's a Colour Scientist' or 'DJs Got a Gun' with an original electronic sound.
The Robots are also well known for their appearance in The Mighty Boosh as electro girls Neon and Ultra and as the two goth girls in the episode 'Nanageddon. ' They appeared on stage at many of the Boosh after show parties and performed to a Boosh obsessed crowd who were mostly dressed in cow boy boots and big hats, desperately hoping to glimpse the Boosh cast. Admittedly, I may have been at there for that very reason, but five minutes into the Robots dynamic, electric riot-girl esque performance, my own cowboy boots were pointing away from Noel Fielding and rapidly tapping to the electronic beat of Robots in Disguise. After having been transfixed by their silver capes and blue make up, it became apparent that Robots in Disguise could be the next biggest girl duo to storm the indie stage and make music on a completely different level to the normal indie sound. Forget skinny boys with floppy hair and converse shoes, it's time to treat yourself to the delicious, fast and colourful sound of the Robots.
