Fatboy Slim, Big Beach Boutique 3, Brighton Beach, New Year's Day 2007.
By Christina Warner
After a stormy New Year's Eve, I doubted if anyone would turn up for FatBoy Slim's BBB3. But sure enough by 5pm the place was heaving with people. From the pier onwards 20,000 people accessorised with giant foam hands with "Right here, Right now" printed on them piled onto the beach. The atmosphere was all about seeing in the New Year with style.
With a warm up set by David Guetta (mastermind who teamed up with The Egg to make it seem as if all cars could skate on ice with "Love Don't Let Me Go"), thanked the crowd for masking him feel so at home.
Norman Cook AKA Fatboy Slim himself arrived just on time. Impressively overcoming "technical difficulties" in the form of faulty CD players and jumpy turntable needles, FBS jumped straight in with a stomping remix of Fredde Le Grande's "Put Your Hands Up For Detroit", or rather that the crowd put their hands up for "BRIGHT-ON"!
Through icy winds and torrential downpour the crowd would not be beaten. Encouraged by Fatboy Slim, the pride for his home town shown through; with remixes of Deee-lite's "Groove is in the Heart" and a funky house medley remix of James Brown classics.
Even though the events had been tainted by tragedies from the last Big Beach Boutique, four years ago and much publicity had surrounded the event; it was ultimately commended. Security and police surveillance were tight and safety maintained at the fore. But it really all came down to the crowd; their motivation to enjoy the gig through the wind and rain to have a great time and excusing the corny pun, but the event really had: "...come a long way, baby"!
