Have you heard of Kyle Eastwood? Don't worry, if you haven't you soon will. Not because he has a famous Dad (you guessed right - actor and director Clint Eastwood) but because he plays and writes some mighty fine jazz.
The lad from California plays the upright, acoustic and double bass and in 2004 his album 'Paris Blue' climbed to number one on the French Jazz charts. He wrote music for the two blockbuster movies 'Mystic River' and 'Million Dollar Baby' and he and Michael Stevens are contributing material for the soundtrack for his father's upcoming films, World War II epic 'Flags Of Our Fathers' and 'Letters from 'Iwo Jima'.
His new album 'NOW' features some of the hottest young musicians on London's jazz circuit. Graeme Flowers and Dave O'Higgins let rip on trumpet and tenor saxophone whilst Ben Cullum, (brother of and songwriter for Jamie Cullum) covers vocals. Producer and long time collaborator Michael Stevens guides the men with his experience.
I was there for the album launch at China White nightclub and was extremely impressed by the show. The guys are cool without even trying, unpretentious and strangely captivating. Easy on the eyes and an absolute pleasure on the ears, their jazz and electronic infused songs were instant crowd pleasers. It makes a girl wonder whether Kyle needs someone on tour to carry his instruments!
On the eve of their gig at the Jazz Cafe in London, I chatted to Kyle as he passed through Paris. We talked about the album, his upcoming gigs and what it was like growing up with a famous dad (gotta love those backstage invites and the odd brush with musical legends). Turns out he might just need an assistant too... boy, what a job.
Kyle will be playing at this year's Cheltenham Jazz Festival on May 4th and two nights at Ronnie's (3rd and 5th May). He will also play at the Rainbow Englightenment Fayre in Port Talbot, Wales on July 7th.
