Bat for Lashes have managed to reveal the more magical side of music to emerge from Brighton. Despite the recent success of The Kooks, The Maccabees and Preston aka The Ordinary Boys, Natasha Khan and her band have successfully left behind the average Brighton band that oozes mediocrity with their guitars, skinny jeans and cockney accents.
Bat For Lashes are mystical, mesmerizing, slow, soft and straight from the sea like numinous creatures of the Brighton coast. They use an eclectic mix of instruments that range from; piano, autoharps, viola, fiddle, guitar, drums and clapping. Combine this with Natasha's seemingly haunted yet eerily beautiful voice and you've got your self a band that are set to follow the footsteps of PJ Harvey, Kate Bush, Cat Power and Isobel Campbell. Fur and Gold (Bat for Lashes' most recent album) is a smooth sounding record with relaxing rhythms and various twinkling instruments. Despite this, Bat for Lashes is not just music to listen to in the bath, it is music to dance to, music to be happy to, music to have a heart broken to, music to listen to during a hurricane and music to make magic to.
Visually, Bat for Lashes are very glittery, their make-up shimmers and their clothes twinkle in the dimmed lights - all of which seems to work well with the tone of their music. Although there is a lack of electric guitars and screaming voices, Bat for Lashes remain feisty and powerful through their blatant musical talent, lyrics and general captivating aura.
