THE BRIT AWARDS: Did you rate them?

I don't know about you but it looked to me like most were on their best behavior at last night's Brit Awards at London's Earls Court. Sure, Amy Winehouse's hair seemed a tad rebellious but even the Oasis crew didn't cause much of a stir. Some people are just too damn cool.
Winehouse may struggle to control her hair but her performance, as usual was gutsy and full of jazzy guts. The Scissor Sisters opened the whole she-bang with "I Don't Feel Like Dancing" in what was apparently a mix of blacklight and puppetry. If you saw it, give us all the gory details. I missed it myself (the romantic dinner ran into overtime - there's only so much black cod one can gulp down in a micro-second).
Host Russell Brand did what he does best - looked like a vacant waif scarecrow whilst floating through sentences that sound like they were constructed by Jane Austen herself. I guess it's easier to offend blurry eyed rock stars that way. It has to be said; the man did well. For the first time since 1989 that the Brit Awards were broadcast live and Brand didn't screw it up. "Clap, clap" for the man in black.
Hopefully they served more than free booze during the award ceremony... some of music's divas and ladettes are looking a tad scrawny too. I mean, where exactly did Joss Stone go? She obviously got her dress from Austin Power's personal wardrobe but she didn't have to leave half her body mass behind too. She looks hot (all hail retro) and I love her quirky sense of style but enough is enough. Don't let those thighs get any smaller honey.
The Arctic Monkeys did well in the award department (surprise, surprise), scoring 'British Group' and the 'MasterCard British Album' award. I don't know about you but I wasn't impressed they weren't there to accept the awards. If you're an Arctic obsessive I'm sure you'll soon put me in their place. I can only assume they had a reason (a dress up party by the looks of it). If they'd let me know, I could have taken their place.
Take That performed "Patience" and fought back emotion after winning best 'British Single'. I fought back tears too - tears of laughter. A man in a white hand glove (yes just one) always gives me the giggles. Watching Alan Carr go for a 'Take That' snog and a dry hump or two was the highlight of the night for me. I honestly don't even think he realized he was doing it.
And if you're wondering about the muffled distortions of the sound; It was there for the sole purpose of covering up swearing. No surprise then, that we had 'muffled central' whenever Liam Gallagher ventured near the mic. Whatever happened to good old "bleeps"?

Good blog. In my opinion had it not been for star of the show Russell Brand's hilarious hosting, the Brit Awards for another year were a largely forgettable ceremony. Apart from the Scissor Sisters, all the performances were well within the artist's comfort zone and lacked any real risk-taking. Come on guys! This is supposed to be the UK's answer to the Grammy awards, I think everyone should be really trying to raise the bar. The winners were largely predictable and I thought most of the speeches should have been a lot better.
As for the Arctic Monkeys, their excuse for being too busy rehearsing for the year ahead was pretty pitiful, particularly by all accounts that they made it to the after show party! I have been told it is because they like to stub awards ceremonies, but seeing as they are sure to be winning a whole load of awards in the year's to come, I think this again is very poor.
The Brits have come a long way since the days of Sam Fox & Mick Fleetwood and for the last decade they have been good. But I think that given the current standing of UK music, everyone involved owes it to the British music buying public to give the awards more of an edge and a WOW factor, so they can become rightfully GREAT.
