ALBUM REVIEW: Nicola K

nicola%20k.jpgNICOLA K: Who Am I
Released by Swagbag Records in December 2006

By Peter Coulston

Nicola K is a soulful songstress who blends her Greek Cypriot roots with rock, funky soul and Hip-Hop. Nicola formed her highly competent and professional band while attending Southampton University, and they all now work with producer Benjamin K to deliver the diverse sounds that can be heard on this fine EP. Nicola has also worked with Greek Cypriot Hip-Hop band DNA, and their influence is also apparent here.

Nicola and Benjamin K are the writers on this EP, and they have succeeded in utilising a variety of influences to excellent effect. Not only are the songs well structured musically, they can also boast a strong lyric content that is well worth getting into. The entire CD was produced and mixed by Benjamin K, for which he deserves due credit. The title track opens the album with strong keyboards and easy transfer between Hip-Hop and rock. “This is Me and You” is soulful and softer with an effective mix of guitar and vocal harmonies. The Cypriot influences blend easily with the Hip-hop beats on “Lost in Translation” while “Obsession” does everything it says in the title. Calvin Klein, please take note.

Everyone has a favourite track on a CD, and “Don’t Lecture Me” is mine. I love the keyboards and the way it rocks on the hook. “Destiny” features Andreas of DNA adding Cypriot rap to all the other good stuff. In addition to all this good music and production, let us not lose track of the fact that Nicola K is a brilliant singer. Her voice is strong and passionate, and adds the icing to the cake on this fine EP. If you would like to hear Nicola K for yourself, visit www.swagbag.biz where all will be revealed. I understand that Swagbag Records have other artists in the pipeline who I shall be listening to soon I hope. Watch this space.
