You’ve got to be open minded for Coco Rosie, and if you are, once you’ve heard this band, your music taste will be changed forever. It will be hard to listen to anything without thinking, ‘it’s good, but it’s nothing compared to Coco Rosie.’ However, it is an acquired taste….

Coco Rosie is Bianca and Sierra Casady. Bianca is Coco Rosie’s percussionist and vocalist whilst Sierra plays the guitar, the flute and is a trained opera singer. Coco Rosie is made from a mix of beat boxing, rap and opera singing, oh and we mustn’t forget the random peppering of each song in the sound of a telephone ringing or a cat meowing. Intrigued? You should be.

Their first album was a hip hop record called ‘Word to the Crow’ which was quickly followed by their second album ‘La Maison De Mon Reve.’ ‘La Maison De Mon Reve’ is an absolutely beautiful collection of sounds and words, but doesn’t reach the eccentricity of their third album ‘Noah’s Arc’ which can be seen as good or bad, depending on your taste. It is a soft but jarring album which encapsulates the hauntingly devastating effects of love as heard in ‘I’ll always be by your side’ with lyrics such as ‘I just want to be your housewife, I’ll iron your clothes, I’ll shine your shoes, I’ll make your bed and cook your food.’

‘Noah’s Arc’ was released in 2005 and introduced Coco Rosie fans to beat boxing, animal sounds and the re occurring theme of childhood and religion, also found in their second album. It is a slightly funkier, up beat record but still sprinkles each song with a harp, a flute and an acoustic guitar. The second song of ‘Noah’s Arc’ is ‘Beautiful Boys’ which features Anthony Hegarty from Anthony and the Johnson’s. And what a spell binding, intense and enchanting collaboration that is!

A live performance of Coco Rosie brings the best out of their music due to the eclectic mix of sounds over a live beat boxer combined arty imagery and some funky male dancers dressed in tutus.

They are playing in London in April and are currently working on their new album which is also set to be released in April. I once read a review on Coco Rosie’s ‘Noahs Arc’ claiming it would be the most annoying record you’d ever by. I was astonished, because although it may not be for everyone, no one could possibly deny the striking sound of Coco Rosie.
