Eliza Doolittle. 9th March 2007, Notting Hill Arts Club, London.
Review by Christina Warner
Its rare when an up and coming artist can sound as good live as they do after the post-recording production tweaks.
Even on the tiny stage of the Notting Hill Arts Club Eliza Doolittles voice was a gem. Obviously a proud Londoner, through her pronunciation of bovvered as per her track So High, Doolittles attitude was great. Armed with an air of subtle confidence, that probably developed from years of singing but with the humbleness of wanting to perform to the audience.
Doolittle showcased her ability to go from a modern-day ballad such as the melodic Bubble to an uptempo track with an old skool bassline aided by emotive lyrics such as Frozen Feelings.
With the soulfulness of nu-wave jazz diva Amy Winehouse and with a faithful nod to her London roots a la Lily Allen, but also poignantly with the vocal control that would be found in established artists much older than either.
Perfectly matching soulful vocals and occasional gritty basslines and reaching across the genres from ballads to downtempo trip hop.
Eliza plays at The Good Ship, London - April 8th
