The Green Room, Camden. 21 March 2007
By Peter Coulston
Here I am back in Camden again, visiting one of the smallest venues ever. The Green Room is a vegetarian restaurant located at 106 Parkway, Camden Town; an area that is wall to wall restaurants, clubs and pubs. The Jazz Café is just down the road and the Dublin Castle, the home of many a good night of rock, is almost next door. The rear of the restaurant offers the diners fine, mostly acoustic music performed on a stage that could almost be accused of discriminating against overweight people. It is even smaller than its equivalent at the 12 Bar Club on Denmark Street, and can only accommodate one more person if a full drum kit is used, as was the case last night. I did not eat there but I must say that the food looked and smelled delicious (the desserts!!!). The place was packed which, on a Wednesday night, must say something for the food and the music.
When the music began, at around nine, the audience became very attentive and gave the first artist, Fiona Bevan, due respect. I have heard Fiona before and her songs are gentle but jazzy with gourgeous lyrics about all kinds of things Her acoustic guitar is used to good effect on all numbers, while her voice pays all kinds of tricks to emphasise the words.
