E by Gum EP on Toothless Records
Review by Christina Warner
E-Side: Pharaoh Roché Swing A Right Hook
In typical Pharaoh Roché digitalia style, Swing A Right Hook opens with a bouncing beach ball beat. Gradually raising to a sultry Spanish guitar interlude and layered by drops of electro bass.
Adding a touch of jazznova to a funky beat and electro baseline has meant that finally the boundaries of nu wave electro have been pushed to spicier, sexier frontiers. Aided by the eternally distinctive, if not often overused, twang of the Spanish guitar has resulted in an eclectic mix of sounds.
Roché has shown his obvious dedication to twisting beats á lo Latino as was heard so characteristically in Rochés previous guitar glistening incarnation, Sun of a Beach.
Cleverly layered Swing A Right Hook leaves itself open to great remixing as well as additional vocal possibilities; but only if either are worthy of the beat.
