Us3 : Say What!? : Us3 Records
Released 11 June
Review by Peter Coulston
Us3 is produced by Geoff Wilkinson and is marketed as a mix of hip-hop, jazz and R&B. As far as I am concerned, the sound is very much jazz based with lots of quality rap from Akil Dassan and Gaston and excellent vocals from French R&B singer Adeline. I personally love this album, as it reminds me of the long forgotten art of poetry and jazz, born in the underground culture of Greenwich Village, New York in the late fifties/ early sixties and unfortunately left behind there by the rise of folk music and rock; until now that is. The mix of rap and jazz on this album is a breath of fresh air and the inclusion of some commercial R&B is no bad thing if it promotes the rest of the album. The opening track Say You Belong To Me is the single featuring the fine voice of Adeline and is the most commercial track on the album. Intoxicated could also fill the same role, while the rest of the album mostly features the rappers and the jazz musicians. There are no bad tracks on this record, but I particularly enjoyed the latin sound on Ill Be Right, Bach and the keyboard led The Day That I Died. If you love good jazz, intelligent rap and solid R&B vocals this is for you, but be prepared to pay attention, there is one hell of a lot going on here, and its all good.
Catch Us3 at The Jazz Cafe in September.
