Hed Kandi @ Pacha, 26th May 2007
Review by Christina Warner
Haute house hasnt had its day!
Ok, Ill admit it! I had my preconceptions about Pacha. Rumours alleging its attraction from the yuppie market and catering for the Z-list celebrity, I had my own ideas as to what to expect. This was the London based franchise of the überclub that gained fame in Ibiza and was now world renowned on the dance music scene. The Serve Chilled Party combined Pacha with the heavyweight house label that is Hed Kandi - I went prepared.
But the club has had a decorative and attitude overhaul. On this particular occasion, the venue was laden with the distinctive star-shaped emblem, cartoon bikini-clad ladies of the Hed Kandi logo and huge ceiling-suspended disco globes. With a candle-lit seating area and a balcony overlooking the masses below, the place did have a cool, chilled out vibe. As expected, the drinks were typically London priced but situated at the front entrance of Victoria bus station there were bars and pubs within walking distance for a pre-Pacha drink. The venue was surprisingly small compared with the likes of the ample Ministry of Sound and the maze-like Fabric and was petite for what has been deemed as being a superclub. But I think the title came from the fact that what it lacked in size it had in attitude.
The DJ set saw a good combo between the tracks that gave Hed Kandi its disco-house crown such as De Souza featuring Sheenas Guilty and the Freemasons chart topper Love On My Mind as well as lesser known tracks and more obscure remixes. Adding to the here-comes-summer vibe was the contribution made by saxophonist and percussionist.
On the whole, it seemed that good night was had by all. If you are into your superclubs meets the slickest of the London house scene then this is the ultimate place to be, especially on a night that hosted the glossiest of funky house anthems.
