Simian Mobile Disco
Fabriclive, London. 1st June 2007
Review by Christina Warner
Great set in not so great a venue.
Fabric, behind Londons effortlessly cool Smithfields market, is notorious for showcasing some of the UKs best up and coming dance acts. With D n B legend Andy C as resident and überslick Scratch Perverts having performed last year, Fabric is the place to be on the dance map.
Sadly, not tonight. With little to no security checks at the door and obvious overcrowding the atmosphere has taken a turn for the worse. But I was there for one reason to see the soon-to-be-mainstream beat boppers that were Simian Mobile Disco. A big fan of their take on this years in scene of nu wave rave, SMD have already made a name for themselves in the underground for their contributions to it.
The duo was set to play in the smaller room of the venue and by the time they arrived the place was already packed out. Playing their own tracks of I Believe, Its The Beat and Hustler, as well other tracks such as the Emperor Machines Seka Wants You the crowd was loving their work. Shame the place was so filled with mock smoke that you couldnt actually see them on stage.
Not sure if the suspiciously young-looking crowd had any idea of who they were and genuinely appreciated what they were seeing and hearing. A pity that such a talented collective had to play in such disappointing conditions. Hope Fabric gets itself back to its previous superb form.
