The Chemical Brothers
We Are The Night
Review by Gabs
The Chemical Brothers return with another piece of masterful house, that takes in the usual assortment of beats and breaks, the correct dosage of acid, a whole bunch of bleeps and finished off with some whopping basslines!
Despite the opening tracks laying down familiar production styles, its Saturate (a tune that tore its way through the bedraggled tents of Glastonbury recently) that really rolls out the beats in a rather large way. Do It Again refines the approach with the added vocals of the hotly tipped Ali Love, stripping things down to bare essentials. Fat Lip adds some off-kilter rhymes for The Salmon Dance, a wonky number that adds something different to the album where spooky nu-wave synths accompany the ex- Pharcyde rappers comedic turns on the mic.
Despite the usual high quality upbeat tracks, its the wistfully gentle The Pills Wont Help You Now that is the standout track. The melancholic ode, sung by Texan band Midlake at the end of the album is a real unexpected treat and ends rounds off the album nicely.
For 18 years now the Chems have been stitching together beats. The time has seen them throw parties in Manchester under a 237 Turbo Nutters guise, change their name from Dust to Chemical and go from long to short haircuts. Throughout this time one things remained constant, their ability to continue to make outstanding albums and sell out tours a rare feat for a dance act.
