We came, we saw and we got soaked to the bone marrow... the Rise Festival hit Finsbury Park on Sunday and poor ol' Jamelia's set was a wash out. I left my umbrella at work over the weekend and I've never regretted it more. My carefully straightened hair shot into scarecrow mode and the T-shirt of the beer bellied man in front of me magically adopted the see-through qualities of cling-wrap. The fest turned into one big wet T-shirt contest in a matter of seconds, and still the masses partied on. You just can't keep a good fest down.
Later, the sun came out for long enough to bathe the revellers in time for The Noisettes, Kelis, K'Naan and Skatalites. While we chowed down on lentil wraps, corn on the cob, sugar cane and curried goat, we barely noticed our wet behinds and muddy shoes.
As we braved the spinning rides (and wine filled tums) we looked down on a damp but smiling crowd. There's nothing like a free festival in central London and year after year, Rise pulls in the most eclectic crowds and diverse music. It's top of my list... this is anti-racism at its best.
Don't miss next year's event... just don't forget your brolly.
