REVIEW: The Tavistock

The Tavistock is the Wednesday night acoustic show at The Bedford, when the Shakespeare Globe is temporarily abandoned to accommodate Burnsy’s Quiz Night. I first saw Paulo Nuttini at this venue and I gather that James Morrison performed an early gig here also. The format was four songs each by five artists, split between two sets.

The show opened with Louise Cairns, a very competent keyboard based singer songwriter who took fourth spot in the second half. Her vocals are not quite as pure as other similar artists but she more than makes up for it with fine keyboard skills that come from her classical background. Good songs, too; I particularly enjoyed “Man At The End Of The Road”.

Grecco Buratto is a songwriter/producer from Brazil who is now based in Los Angeles and sings in Portuguese. He opened the second half and included various latin rhythms and extensive translations of the songs. Nice stuff. I wasn’t sure if I liked Juan Zelada’s voice when he took the number three spot in the first half, but I changed my mind when he closed the evening. Another performer with Brazilian roots who is now based in Liverpool, he performs in English and blew us away with the closing number, “Ignorance Is Bliss”. Maybe it was the beers during the interval, Juan.

The Water Blues in the form of Lee Noble followed and took second place in the second half. Lee is a good singer and keyboard player and his guitarists were the business, he just needs to find a new lyricist. Having said that, they will probably end up with a song in the top ten singles, or winning the Eurovision Song Contest.

joharrop.jpgLast but not least was Jo Harrop, a class act if ever there was one. Her vocals are an absolute joy and her choice of material impeccable. Quite jazzy but very accessible, she has a single out at the present called “Give It Away” which she performed with minimal guitar accompaniment from the talented Steve. Her closing number “Not Ready For Love” was gutsy and showed just what this lady can do with a good song. Look out for her. Overall, a good night with some excellent high spots. All the artists performing are on Myspace, where you can sample there work for yourselves.
