THE JOY THAT IS 'AYO'
Interview by Katie Spain
I've done some terrible interviews in my time... sultry bands who answer questions with blank 'too cool for school' stares and some who quite literally don't speak my language. Occasionally however, you meet someone who flits into your day for a brief half hour and leaves a glorious lasting impression. Ayo is one such artist - one of the special few who not only sings like an angel but has the personality to match the voice. It's no wonder really... the woman has a lot to smile about.
Ayo's track record is impressive; her new album Joyful has reached platinum status in France and will be released in the UK on August 30th. Her music reflects a background rich with diversity. Growing up with a Nigerian father and Romanian Gypsy mother in Germany is enough to give anyone a mixed musical palette; throw stints in Paris and New York into the mix and you've got yourself a soul, folk, afro beat and reggae buffet!
When I meet the tall, dark and beaming artist in a London hotel, I'm struck by her warm greeting. She has a look and gentility that lights up a room and although she hasn't been feeling well, she approaches with a beaming smile and outstretched hand. She is tall, bright eyed, bubbly from word go and a delight to chat to. If this stunner was a visual artist, she'd paint with sweeping fluid strokes; the canvas left dripping with colour and emotion.
Our banter ranges from music, Australian sharks and the danger of comfortable seats to pint-sized. This is one solo artist I could chat to for hours. Here's just a snippet of a lady with big things ahead of her.
