ALO
Roses & Clover
Brushfire Records
Having enjoyed a brilliant set by this band on Friday at Bush Hall, which you can read all about in Last Week In London-Water Rats and California Cats, I could not resist buying the album at the concession stall. They did many of the songs and are as good live as they are on the album; in fact, when you see them live, you are treated to much longer guitar solos. The opening track, Maria, reminds me of Jackson Browne, and we are reminded of so many other influences all the way through this great album. They take the best from all that they have experienced and make it their own. Empty Vessel (A Pledge Of Allegiance), Plastic Bubble and All Alone bring out the jazz in these guys, while they get folky on Shine and funky on Lady Loop. Try is the most commercial track, a very catchy number with a reggae feel to it. They can rock and pull off gentle ballads, all with the West Coast cool that you would expect from a California based band. They attracted a large audience on Friday, many of whom seemed to know all the songs. If, like me, you are fond of Americana at its best, you must get this album. They have a myspace where you can sample many of the tracks mentioned above. Give it a try, youll love it.
