MESH-29
Dead Machine: AMS Records#
Review by Peter Coulston
These guys opened the set at The Troubadour last week for Rosalie Deighton, and you can see it reviewed in 'Last Week In London' - Old Brompton & New Broccolli. In that review I referred to them as keyboard led and compared them to Bailey through their association with the Janice Long Radio 2 show. Having listened to this, their second album, I retract much of that. They are not keyboard led, but use a good mix of keys and acoustic guitar in a distinctive style; and they should not be compared to Bailey. Each of these bands are doing their own thing, and very well, too, in both cases. In fact, the more I listened to this band, the more I liked it; and by the end I realised that the emotive vocals and lyrics reminded me of Counting Crows, one of my all time favourite bands. So, here we have it; a collection of excellent tracks, well performed by Adam Mezzalesta on vocals and guitar and Anthony Shiels on piano, backing vocals and guitar. Once again, it is so difficult to pick one track over another; My Brand New Lullaby Cigarette and Alone were all brilliant and they rocked a little more on Turning. Close My Eyes really did it for me, but this album does not contain a dud track. Give their new single, Over The Barricade a listen and then buy the album, its even better.
