Ani Difranco in the UK

Ani Difranco is coming to the UK!! Gracing our shores three times, her European tour begins in Manchester, heads to Glasgow and ends in London and she’ll be heading out to Ireland, Belgium, France, Germany and host of other countries are gagging for her too.

Born in 1970 her career was at its most profiled in the 90’s. Not to rub it in the faces of you veteran Ani fans but this does put me in the younger age range of people counting down the days till Canon comes out. If like me, your first encounter with Difranco’s music has been recent, might I suggest you too pre-order Canon, her latest album due to be released September 11th 2007. It won’t take her long to convert you.

I am certainly converted, though admittedly, I was already heading down that path having been exposed to Tori Amos and Alanis Morisette’s Jagged Little Pill as a kid. Canon however is not quite the beaten track.

This collection of tunes, hand picked by Ani will be a condensed catalogue of Difranco magic since her early days. The tracks that appear on Canon won’t necessarily be her most popular but certainly the ones she feels portray her evolution in sound most accurately. To sample her distinctive varying beat check out ‘Both Hands’, a reflective song sung with a sweet sound and teeny tiny hint of Lene Marlin in her voice. Both Hands first appeared on Ani’s 1989 self-titled album. On the Canon version there’s a little more angst to it, the electric guitar intro commands a little more attention, the track seems bigger somehow and Difranco sounds less reflective and accepting and a tad more fervent about what she’s saying- no hint of Lene here. Listening to both versions of ‘Both Hands’ you can clearly hear the growth of Difranco’s sound. From the genial, self assured 18-year-old to a far more accomplished and frank woman.

‘Shameless’ and ‘Paradigm’ are also good examples of Ani’s unmasked lyrics and powerful melodies. Her words are refreshing, her rapport with her listeners is charming; I hope she won’t take offence if I call her voice pretty. Her thought provoking lyrics are often delivered in a speaking style varying the rhythm, keeping her listeners engaged.

If you’re not sure whether you’ll like her stuff, Difranco fans have also been known to like Aimee Mann, Tori Amos and it has to be said Alanis Morisette- be honest now. Canon will be a great introduction.

Expect a full EP review of Canon after its release on September 11th 2007.
