Gig Review: Ali Love

ALILOVE.jpg YO YO - 20th September 2007.

Threading my way though Nottinghill's Yo Yo, I felt like I had blindly stumbled into the set of Nathan Barley. Around me, people crumpled to the floor, spinning on their heads and twisting themselves into strange shapes, girls were perfecting their heavy fringes and others merely stood around, baseball caps jutting to one side, gold medallions swinging, gleaming under the lights.

Once I had got myself in to ‘trash bat’ mode (if you haven’t seen Nathan Barley – check it out ) things became a lot easier. As the lights dimmed and the LOVE sign suspended above the stage glowed pink, the already crammed venue grew tighter, waiting for Ali Love and his band, The Lovers.

Ali Love calls him self pop – but Love is unlike any kind of pop that I have heard – thank god. Ali Love is a mixture of pop, disco and funky electro, carrying some deliciously protruding bass lines.

As a genre today, pop is a bland blend of irritating sounds that seem to get swallowed into a beckoning vacuum. It is music that stays well within the lines and lacks originality. Ali Love, however, flirts with boundaries but takes obvious joy in striding across them, creating music that catches you unaware and allures you to the dance floor.

Ali Love swaggered to the centre of the stage, his shiny pale yellow bomber jacket glossy under the spotlights. The performance was bouncing with colour, glittering with tweaked funky beats and a blazing stage presence. I think I can say from the bottom of my heart that Ali Love is the only man in the world that could pull off a tight, white vest too.

Yo Yo is a fitting venue for Ali Love as it is so intimate. His voice danced through the venue backed by the guitars, spread thick with an electro vibe from the keys. Secret Sunday Lover was the highlight, played early on and setting the tone for the rest of the gig.

Basically, Ali Love – he’s weeeellll Jackson yeah??!!
