The Chemical Brothers
Trafalgar square, London
Review by Adam Walker
First up were the Scissor Sisters last year, and last night The Chemical Brothers became the second big act to stage a show in the awesome setting of Trafalgar Square. I wasn't much of a fan before the gig; I knew Galvanize and of course Hey Girls and Block Rockin', but after stomping back through Piccadilly Circus on the way home, I am now a true convert of the Brothers' sounds.
It is, however, their visuals and the setting that made the gig as enjoyable as it was - I fear without them it could have been any generic rave in the East End, albeit without a roof.
The PR around this was tad confusing; it turned out that the 3D glasses were only meant for the Calvin Harris set - which worked well enough, but nothing we hadn't seen before. As for the finale, we were promised something truly special that hadn't been done before, with the help of UVA. But it didn't really deliver and I came away slightly disappointed. There was huge scope for the use of holograms and even fireworks to create the promised spectacle of light.
That said, the atmosphere, the sounds and the visuals far made up for the lack of beer (there were only 2 bars and the line up for each was 30 minutes plus!) and underwhelming finale. So with that, 9000 people left clutching their 3D glasses cherishing the memory of being part of something special. It seems London has found its new outdoor stadium.
