Color Climax
Plug it In
Release date: 22 Oct 2007
label: Breakin Bread
Welcome to the funky, porno-esque world of Color Climax, spun from the musical tinkerings of prolific Dj Paul Toller and dedicated keyboard player Steve Ashby. Plug It In is their debut album release on the South London hip hop and funk loving breakin bread label.
First off is the albums title track which features an old gangster movie style skit, then bursts into infectious funky breaks, that pay homage with a James Brownish sample to get your head snapping at just a the right angle of funky.
What becomes immediately obvious is Color Climaxs love of the three combinations: good breaks, crazy Hammond riffs and the guitar. It works well. Apart from two tracks, namely She took my love and You got what you wanted featuring a refreshingly imperfect rendition by Nana K, the album is an instrumental journey into the escapades of a sexy, sleazy yet funktastic underworld.
Beckoning for dancefloor participation is Pa Coco Solo. A great use of latin and funk elements with a sample that will tickle many a remixers ear. Disque O Heights is another great tune to shuffle to with its weirdly techy synth bass and crisp, sterile strings. A personal favourite is Power Pac. The distortion feels just right and I love the loose snare roll.
The album is saturated with Dj Paul T and Steve Ashbys obvious love for good breaks , hammond freestyles and latin instrumentation. Plug It In delivers a sleazfunkin urban yet organic feel- and all this from Coventry. Good stuff and a great soundtrack to just do about anything to.
