- Review By Erin Ross
Admittedly, I know very little about Rufus Wainwright, so I went along to his gig at the Manchester Apollo not really knowing what to expect, but secretly hoping for a cool, young, audience, watching a dark, one-man-and-his-guitar type tortured soul -how wrong was I?
The crowd ranged from pre-teens right up to the somewhat elderly couple that I sat next to, and my dark, brooding, young man turned out to be a very camp American wearing a diamond encrusted pinstripe suit who was, incidentally, accompanied by a variety of aged musicians in equally sparkly outfits.
There is no doubt that Wainwright has an impressive voice which filled the sold out Apollo, but to be honest, I found it difficult to tell the songs apart as they all had a very similar whiney quality to them. His frequent penis jokes between songs also failed to impress me but the eclectic crowd seemed to be loving it. Although technically Im sure it was a decent performance, I would be inclined to recommend that only genuine Wainwright fans should attend.
Are you a genuine Rufus Wainwright fan who loves his frequent penis jokes? Do you disagree with this review? If so, then leave us a comment!
