Its 1982 - the Falklands War has begun, Prince William is born and Channel 4 has been launched. Disco is dying and electro has taken over. Post Punk band Joy Division are pumping through people's stereos and dousing listeners with melancholy. But, while all this is going on, a small record shop in London called Rock On is giving birth to Kent Records a well loved Soul label that is now celebrating its 25th anniversary.
Kent Records heavily featured in the back lash against disco and were part of the mod revival. They also adopted various artists coming from jazz, deep soul, southern soul, 70s soul and funk backgrounds.
Kent Records first LP For Dancers Only was released later in 1982. It included 16 powerful and infectious black, soul beat tracks, setting the standard for the next 25 years.
Quite rightly, Kent Records want to celebrate the last 25 years in style. On the 19th October 2007, fans are invited to The Forum for a fantastic night of their favourite soul artists. The evenings line up includes the glorious Mary Love who was featured on the first LP, Maxine Brown, The Flirtations, Tommy Hunt and Winfried Parker.
A host of celebrity MCs will be there and there will be a set from the original 6TS DJs Ian Clark, Mick Smith and Ady Croasdell.
Get yourself to The Forum and drench yourself in some soul for the sake of nostalgia, or go and soak up some music history and make some soul memories of your own.
