The Gospel ft Kira
Skating your Pool
Released on the artist driven-artist led Brown Punk label set up by Tricky, Danish songstress Kira defines her musical style as Soul Punk. Word? As I am always on the lookout for weird and wonderful merging (Patti La Belle meets Sex Pistols anyone?), I was curious as hell when I picked this one up. I seriously expected to hear a concoction of various influences which Kira through the sheer force of her talent (never mind the producer) managed to spin into a new sound of her own. Maybe she has. Maybe whats next to come will blow me away but Skating the Pool isnt doing it. Rather, its a mellow, melancholy, track with nothing quirky or outstanding to grab my attention. Kiras got a good voice and does sound like she has the potential to unleash the dragon but vocally sounds contained and polished here.
All in all, even with the help of a remix by Tricky, this track is not exactly genre defying and wont get your music antennae spurting sparks either.
