Album Review - Coco.
Colbie Caillat.
- Bob Meijer
Being a grateful appreciator of acoustic singer/songwriter music by the likes of Bob Dylan, John Mayer and Jack Johnson, this new little album by this pretty American girl from sunny California seemed just what I was up for, in this bloody cold place called London. Album cover looks good enough, I can do with some sunny tunes to imagine better, less snotty and much, much warmer times.
Not too familiar with her name though which isnt surprising at all with this being her first official album. But quickly skipping through iTunes pre-listening tracks I find out her name does ring a bell, her hit Bubbly was quite a hit on MySpace a while back and she didnt sign with any record company for quite some time, which was quite remarkable considering the fact that she had millions of visitors on her MySpace. Smart girl.
Right - so time for a proper listen then. First track and I notice the quality of the production; its stripped down to its bare essentials, the voice, guitar and some backing vocals and the odd string section. In more known cases producers often tend to overproduce artists to compensate for a lack of creativity or talent. But for Colbie Caillat this is definitely not the case, her tone of voice is just perfect. The whole album sounds rather peaceful and still catchy at the same time and it definitely works the way it should. So what Im not into girly tunes about sitting on the beach with a random good looking bloke- this stuff does really sound just right for its purpose. The overall blend of voice, guitar and background instruments are so delicately balanced, the production of the songs are as close to perfection as you can get, if you ask me.
Being a bloke this might be a tad too sweet for my liking but I played it to some of my girl friends and, as I expected, they loved it. Its very sweet and sunny overall, but catchy tunes like Tailor Made and Bubbly stick out as singles that I can imagine doing very well in the charts in spring or summer. Id say this album will do very well in the charts following the success its had on iTunes already, and I wont be surprised if this girl would grow up to be the next Jack Johnson!
