What would you say if someone asked you to tell them about the most memorable gig you've ever been to? Could you choose one? Would it be big, small, a festival or a private guerrilla gig?
One musician who knows all too much about little gigs in intimate spaces is Delays frontman Greg Gilbert. After a sell out six date mini-UK tour of intimate venues, the band has a hefty collection of on and off stage gig memories. We caught up with Greg the night after a Halloween gig (complete with costumes). As far as audience experiences go, his most memorable was just a Stone's throw away...
"It was probably the Stone Roses at the Brighton Centre. A lot of people had been waiting for them for so long that they were almost like a myth. It was total euphoria; there were grown men looking sky-wards with their eyes shut and singing every lyric. It was a revelation. It was total inspiration for me. As a side note to that, when we were trying to get a band together at school; the gig that galvanised us was seeing Pulp at Glastonbury. That was something else. He did this big speech saying how it had taken them thirteen years to get there and that if they could do it, we could do it too"
Delays' tour ends tonight with an explosive finale at the Hoxton Bar and Grill. They released their 5 track Limited EP Love Made Visible on November 12th so expect to see a lot more of the Southampton foursome. It's an impressive package of tunes... best inhaled live. Their 'Love Made Visible' is a suitable colourful viewing experience too.
