GIG REVIEW: Alphabeat

Review by Zarina Raja

Alphabeat look set to turn the realms of Pop upside-down and inside-out; this was obvious as soon as they bounced onto the tiny Barfly stage which had no where near enough space to contain Alphabeat’s contagious enthusiasm. It spilled over the stage and crept to the back of the room and managed to instigate a synchronised nodding of heads and tapping of feet. Although the audience didn’t exactly throw themselves into the set, that's what you get when you're first and it's early. Had it been a little later (and busier), the masses would have filled that awkward semi-circle of space at the front.

Alphabeat are a young and funky Pop band from Denmark. For some reason, you can just tell that they aren't a British band. Last night they seemed happy, charmingly innocent and well... just happy. Not many British bands have that magnetic enthusiasm that crosses between cheerfulness and youthful eagerness. Alphabeat SMILE on stage too, how nice is that? I don’t think I have ever seen a band smile on stage. It is this lovely simplicity and joy-promoting music that puts Alphabeat into the Pop category. They resemble the Go Team! (who are British, and I'm sure they've smiled on stage) with their ridiculous amounts of energy; jumping about, dancing, swirling and twirling and generally having a great time; they smacked their feet on the floor while belting out vocals and lost themselves in the songs.

This is a unique band that doesn’t seem to be following a particular musical trend. The girl-boy vocals that loop through the songs tinge Alphabeat with a Belle and Sebastian vibe but a poppier and louder (but lighter) Belle and Sebastian. They are young, clean and sparkly. On stage they put on a fine show that is guaranteed to lift your mood; I dare you to stay motionless through their set. Alphabeat are definitely a band that need to be appreciated live. Their songs are crammed full of life and an irresistible high-spirited feeling which is maximised through their fast-paced and jubilant shows. This youthful-cheer could get a bit irritating after a while, but I am a Radiohead fan, so I explode if I listen to too much upbeat stuff.
