David GrayThe Roundhouse
12th November 2007
Review by Denise Betts
David Gray was first introduced to me in Melbourne, Australia, by a very good friend of mine who had just returned from the UK from her working holiday. He was often the requested tunes for us to zone out to whilst working on our microscopes.
I guess you can say that I have taken quite a liking to David Grays mellow tunes. Nothing quite does it for me more than an acoustic guitar and some smooth vocals.
My orders were clear, 7pm at the Roundhouse to catch the support band. However, in true muso style, 8pm rolls around and yet nothing in the realm of a support band. To the bar then! I order myself a beer only to realize that I had left my wallet at home doh! Red faced and tail between my legs, I get back to my seat to soak in The Roundhouse vibes. The crowd was filling in the spaces and soon it was a full house. The vibe was a crazy, slightly sombre, yet energetic one. There were often times I felt like getting the lighter out to sway with the rhythm in true 70s rockin style.
David Gray interaction with the crowd was unexpectedly funny and got most of the crowd laughing. Off the cuff comments to the demanding individuals in the crowd, made for some entertainment.
He played two sets. The first set was very guitar orientated with the odd hit song thrown in. The less known songs were enjoyed in as much force by the crowd, however the odd tune did have me yawning at points.
The second set was a lot more piano and band with less known songs, however the crowd were in a trance to the riffs, constant vocals and solo guitar sets often belted out over the amp. This was the point in the night that the hard core fans (as hard core as you can get to David Gray) were in full force, bopping along and singing for word. For me, the medium style fan who knows an albums worth of songs, this was the point in the night that I got bored.
I had a great night chilling out to the familiar tunes of David Gray. He is a very talented musician and amazing on an acoustic guitar, however, to be honest, there is only so much chilling you can do to the sombre tunes in The Roundhouse. I think David Gray is more suited to the festival scene. I did come away from the evening with intentions to buy his greatest hits album for the background music I enjoy whilst working.
