GIG REVIEW: NOFX

NOFX plus supports The Loved Ones and TAT
Brixton Academy

Review by Emma Dalby

If you’ve ever been to a NOFX gig then you’ll know to expect one thing. Talking. The topics are usually politics, religion, racism and subculture, all of which are done with a very comical edge. In fact a typical NOFX show would last 11/2 hours with their music taking up about 40minutes of this. That’s how much on stage banter you get with these guys!
And that’s exactly how the show at the London Brixton academy panned out.

Before NOFX took charge we had 2 supports in the way of ‘The Loved Ones’ Philadelphia punkers who played a decent set but couldn’t keep hold of the crowd who blatantly weren’t interested in seeing anyone other than NOFX. Then TAT who took to the stage and fared slightly better due to being Londoners themselves, I think they even had a few fans in the audience too.

But it wasn’t until Fat Mike appeared did the crowd really appreciate the show.
The brash n' bad-taste US punk rockers are in the UK to promote their tenth album 'Wolves in Wolves' Clothing' and they kick started the night with their loud, fast and uncompromisingly offensive blend of skate punk, hardcore punk and reggae.

Starting with a 30 second intro song they took immediate control of Brixton, with the help of a couple of dancing lesbians of course, and a 1ft by 2ft banner which someone ‘apparently’ forgot to lower at the start. (Think Spinal Tap and the slightly small Stonehenge set) With all jokes aside though it was a thoroughly entertaining night. There was good mix of old and new tracks including something extremely rare, something many NOFX fans might have never seen before.
The band played one of their most infamous songs, the full 18 minutes and nineteen seconds of ‘The Decline’ a song with no chorus to speak of.

I must admit this did lose a few people in the audience but to see a band with songs averaging at about 1m 30 playing something that lasted for nearly 20minutes made it a very special night.
Another highlight would have to include the cover of ‘Radio’ by the legendary ‘Rancid’ a great punk reggae tune played effortlessly by the band.

Fat Mike has onstage banter down to a science and when it came to finishing the set no one could make it funnier. Their last song was played with the band stating ‘ok one more’…the songs became shorter and ‘ok one more’ was used again and again until they did actually play us out properly.

In all, the gig was exactly what you would expect from NOFX with a few surprises thrown in as well. But for those who haven’t seen this band don’t go expecting technical and musical ability, don’t be offended and make sure you take everything you see for the light-hearted fun that it is. NOFX know they suck live and they’ve even titled an album that to prove it!
