INTERVIEW: Electrovamp

Interview By Zarina Raja

I’m with Electrovamp – I don’t like the vibe in the V.I.P either, or should I say that I don’t think that I would like the vibe in the V.I.P. In fact, it’s a really elitist concept that should be banned…Anyway, Electrovamp have got it right. Their first single I Don’t Like The Vibe In The V.I.P is out on Dec 31st. It is definitely one to crank up on New Years Eve and dance the night away to - no one’s neighbours are ever going to get sick of hearing lyrics like ‘risk it for a biscuit.’

Electrovamp are sisters, Tammy and Kally, from Cardiff. They make in your face tunes that bang and thump with colourful Electro beats. Electrovamp are guaranteed to get a party started - they will vamp that amp and have it thudding until the early moring.

I got to chat to Kally about Electrovamp's future plans and what really happened when they caused ten thousand pounds worth of damage at their bosses' house...

What was it that made you take a turn down the Electrovamp route? Is there anyone in particular that has inspired you?

We just really like the Electro sound at the moment; we like a lot of the cool acts that are around at the moment. Its quite in your face so it is a lot more like our personalities.

It looks like you guys have great fun when making your music? Has there ever been a point when you thought that maybe a career in music had been the wrong choice?

Um, no. Before we went down this route, we were both doing other stuff and it just wasn’t working. When we wrote our first song, we hit it off straight away. We knew it was definitely the way to go. We had so much fun recording in the studio; we would have fits of laughter coming up with the lyrics. Its mad and so much fun doing them?

How did Electrovamp form? Did you start out by messing around with some lyrics?

We were playing about with some things and then we all sat down together; me, Tammy, a guy called Ian Mac and Paul Middleton. We started throwing in some lyrics and thinking of things that we would say back home, like risk it for a biscuit, or other things that we would say in our normal everyday sentences.

You guys have a really funky image; where do you get all your clothes from?

Places like Top Shop, just general High Street shops. A lot of people get the clothes that we wear and probably the stuff that we have got on in the video. We buy regular stuff but fink them up with accessories and a bit of glitter.

Is there a particular female artist that you draw your music (or fashion) inspirations from?

We really like Sugababes and the vibe that they have. Image wise…I don’t know, I think our image is more from us than copying off of other people.

Have you heard of a band called Robots in Disguise? I think you would like them, they have a similar vibe to you.

No…I’m just writing it down though.

Tell me about your new single ‘I don’t like the vibe in the VIP.’ Have you ever had a bad experience in a VIP room?

Well, you just sit there thinking that everyone else is having fun but you just have to sit there, too scared to move in case people look at you. You look outside and think you would rather be there dancing and having fun. It always seems that everyone outside VIP is having abetter time. They might not let us in anymore though!

What is it like being on a band with your sister? Do you fight a lot or do you get a long pretty well?

We get along; we have our petty arguments like, ‘get off my straightens,’ just normal sister arguments.

What’s the age difference between you?

It’s just a year. People will ask us what the age difference is and then say, oh, are you twins and we’re like, uh, no!

How is the debut album coming along? Is there a release date for it yet?

No, not yet; it depends on how well the singles do. We will hopefully have an album out next year. The album has a concept which is basically a sound track to the week end. ‘I Don’t Like The Vibe In The VIP’ is obviously the song about a Friday night where you meet a guy. The follow on is when you find out the next day that the guy you snogged also snogged someone else. We have another song where you are quite gutted about it but put on a front. It comes to an end with a song about the hang-over at the end of a weekend. It is quite true to every teenager’s life.

I heard that when you were making your video for the single, you caused ten thousand pounds worth of damage in your manager’s house where it was filmed. What happened?

He is ok about it now; he is fine. He went a bit mad though; he didn’t expect ten thousand pounds worth of damage. There was broken TVs, pictures had come off the wall and we had written VIP everywhere. It all just went a bit mad.

Has he forgiven you?

We said if we get top five, he won't sue us! We have to pray for the top five now.

Have you guys played in London yet?

Yeah, we did Heaven last week. It was amazing; it was mad. We had to perform in a cage. The crowd was going mad and we were lovin’ it. We were throwing ourselves around in the cage – I thought I was going to break my neck.

When you are making music for Electrovamp, what are you listening to?

All sorts. If it’s a good song, I will listen to it. I like Dance, R’N’ B, Inide and Electro.

What have Electrovamp got lined up for the future?

Hopefully a new album and maybe go to America, Germany and France – the whole world.

With Christmas coming up, what would you ask for if you could have anything in the world?

I think that might be a number one!

Lastly, what is the best gig that to have been to as a fan?

Well, we went to see Take That once! Haha. That was great. It was at the Millenium stadium. It was really interesting to watch.

I Don’t like The Vibe In The V.I.P is out on Dec 31st
