MORRISSEY
CAMDEN ROUNDHOUSE RESIDENCY
21st Jan to 27th Jan 2008
Feature by Christopher Todd
When you read in reviews that certain people or songs can make an adult cry, it isnt true, its poetic license, it looks good on paper but isnt true.
When was the last time the streets were awash with people crying along to Hard Fi? Or you yourself accidentally shuffled onto a song on your ipod that instantly attacked your tear ducts .on a packed tube with tourists staring at you? Exactly, none.
There are only three acts Ive seen where people have been reduced to tears; Radiohead, Brian Wilson and Morrissey. He can make grizzly grown men burst into tears at gigs just by standing on the stage, not sure if theyre tears of sorrow, joy, elation, shock or all of them but it happens at every gig where Morrissey will effortlessly whip up the crowd into a rabid and religious fervour.
Label free for the second time in his career but way too greedy to do a Radiohead and give his music away for free, Moz is currently being courted by every major label in the Country who all understandably want a piece of his rejuvenation. He has always been held up in high esteem but now his status is that of a living legend and with good reason. The Smiths made the eighties bearable for so many people but there are also three classic albums within his much maligned solo career; 1992s Your Arsenal, 94 Vauxhall and I and last years Ringleader of the tormentors with endless other tracks spread out over his eight album career.
The wit and wisdom of Oscar Wilde, classic 1950s film matinee hero looks, sexual ambiguity, a spellbinding stage presence and great hair oh and a back catalogue of twenty five years worth of prime British musical heritage to delve into makes these gigs an unmissable prospect
Morrissey plays a six night residency at the Camden Roundhouse in January from 21st to the 27th. Get your Morrissey tickets here.
