The Fall
Galtymore - London
30th November 2007
Review by Christopher Todd
Being an underground National institution means you can get away with murder as it will be attributed to being a quirk in their character. It's something The Falls leader Mark E Smith has been doing for thirty years, be it sacking your band on an American tour or making an album so unlistenable that even your staunchest of fans refuse to buy it.
The same applies to The Fall's live shows too, they can be on fire like the last ever show at Hammersmith Palais earlier this year or like this show, ramshackle, directionless and at some points; just a noise, the show is to showcase work in progress songs, by the sound of them they need to continue that work as its a mess. Stumbling on late, The Fall precede to play a garage rock influenced set relying on new unfinished songs and ones from their last two albums with hardly any nods to their past, even their mainstay tune 'Mr Pharmacist' doesn't get a look in.
Mark E Smith looks as haggard as ever and can barely stand as he gurns at the audience and shrieks his usual nonsensical lyrics at the crowd, at one point the smoking ban strikes so he take his microphone to the smoking area outside by the side of the stage whilst continuing the yelping.
It looks as though he is trying too hard to be Mark E Smith, almost as if he'd read what Mark E Smith is supposed to do so he tried his hand at it. Turning the guitars down regularly to the obvious annoyance of the guitarist is one thing but showing no regard to the paying audience is totally another, having said that, their next show will no doubt be amazing, bastard.
