Interview By Zarina Raja
Nothing will beat a dose of Alphabeat this Christmas. If you are looking for some cheeky Pop that is nothing like the Cheeky Girls then you have come to the right place. Alphabeat have brought their colourful sound all the way from Denmark. They are currently darting about London putting on an array of fantastic live shows, full of sparkle and energy.
The band is renowned for their enthusiastic gigs, rich with vigorous Pop melodies and catchy vocals. With their new single Fantastic 6 circulating the airwaves and allegedly drawing attention from the likes of Jo Whiley, Alpahbeat look set to rock the music scene next year and will hopefully bring a new album with them.
There are some bands that you just know are going to make or break - and Alphabeat will definitely make - so we were delighted when we got the chance to chat with vocalist Stine. I was keen to know what it was like living with the five boys of Alphabeat and who was the most annoying not that Stine gave much away.
I saw your show at the Camden Barfly last week, it was great; are all your shows that energetic?
Yes, I believe they are actually; that is what we are here for. It is great feeling to be up there and singing to all those people that dont know us but are really positive about it.
Are there times when you just dont feel that energetic on stage?
Perhaps sometimes during the day before the show but always half an hour before the show, we get worked up for it. Only one out of two hundred is a non energetic show.
I suppose once you are on the stage you forget about everything else and just get really into it?
Yeah, you really feel the rush.
How old are you guys? There was a brilliant youthful vibe coming from you!
Im the youngest and Im twenty one, the oldest is twenty seven.
How did Alphabeat come together? Were you all leading different musical paths?
Well, the boys were trying to be Indie-Rock but they realized that they were better at Pop and liked to have the whole key board thing. I didnt really know them that well when I joined
But now you have taken centre stage!
Yeah!
I heard that you guys are all living in the same house; whats that like? You must be spending so much time together do you argue?
Its actually great; we have had no problems so far we have only lived here for a month though so we will see.
Does anyone have any really annoying habits that you want to dish the dirt on?
Well, I think I am the messiest one, so that must be annoying.
Youre the only girl in the band, how do you cope with all those men?
Its great. At the beginning I had problems because I didnt really know them that well.
You should always be able to get your own way with them though?
Sometimes; I do get the biggest room too because Im the only girl.
And you dont have to share. When was the first time Alphabeat came to London?
We played Water Rats about four months ago for the first time.
Have you enjoyed yourself over here?
I like it better each day because you find new places to go. I have seen all the tourist attractions with my family about five years ago. Now we are just trying to find the areas that we love.
Have you had the chance to get a look in on the rest of the British music scene?
Mostly just the bands that we have played with.
Your new single, Fantastic 6, was out on Nov 26th . Can you sum the song up for me?
It is an ironic song about the six of us being super heroes and rescuing the world.
That sounds fun, there arent many songs written about that! So, do you have an album plans?
No, not yet. We released one in March in Denmark. It should be out in UK at the beginning of next year, we dont quite know when though. We are still not sure what we are going to call it yet though.
Youre keeping it under wraps then?
Yeah. It is going to be great; there will be a mix of old songs and new songs.
It must be great to perform the dongs one they are new?
Oh, definitely.
As a band, what do you think Alphabeat represent musically?
Uh, cheek Pop! And also a happy vibe.
That is very clear in your music. What do you hope your fans take away from an Alphabeat performance?
Of course we want them to leave the gig smiling and humming the tune and wanting to hear more.
What did you guys like to listen to when you are not making cheeky Pop tunes? Do you have the same music tastes?
Not really but there are a couple of things that we agree upon like David Bowie and Wham.
Has anyone got any really obscure taste like Death Metal?
No, no, definitely not any Heavy Metal; more like Pop and Rock.
With Christmas coming up, I am keen to know what you would ask for if you could have anything you wanted?
I would probably want to have my boyfriend here in London with me.
Are you going to make it home this Christmas to see him?
Yeah, we are all going to go home to see family.
What is in store for Alphabeat in 2008?
Well, we are going to play a lot of gigs in London and around the country in general.
What is your ambition for Alphabeat?
Oh, we are pretty modest; I wouldnt want to say. Lets just see what happens!
Do you have any personal New Years Resolutions?
Um, I think maybe just some more exercise.
I think that is every girls resolution. Lastly, what is the most memorable gig that you have been to as a fan?
Um, that was a festival in Denmark in 2005; it was such a great experience.
Take a look at some live video footage and our review of Alphabeat.
