GIG REVIEW: Spice Girls

Spice Girls
O2 Arena - Saturday December 15th

By Zarina Raja

We headed down to the biggest show of 2007 – apart from Led Zeppelin of course – to see the Spice Girls' first date in the UK after nine years.

What we found was an excited crowd, desperate to see the girls back together on stage again. This time round, the fans were all grown up; drinking wine and pottering about in high shoes, giggling with their mates and gushing at the thought of seeing their childhood idols. The show was heavily laced with a magical nostalgic air; for both the audience and the girls themselves.

They belted out classic after classic; Spice Up Your Life, Too Much, 2 Become 1, Say You’ll Be There, Stop, Viva Forever, Goodbye and Mama, plus a solo song from each Spice Girl apart from Victoria Beckham who had her own fashion spot. Your guess is a good as mine.

Towards the end, they threaded in a Disco medley that whipped their fans into a dancing mass of tipsy divas.

The highlight of the show was Geri Halliwell’s solo performance of ‘It’s Raining Men.’ She shook and shimmied that tiny, toned body of hers and really let her self lose control for the thousands of ecstatic fans. Melanie C’s solo came crashing in at second best with her techno inspired single, ‘I Turn to You.’ Victoria Beckham also enjoyed several thumping applauses when ever she took the spot light.

All in all, it was a dazzling show with some eye-catching, glittering costume changes and a splash of sophisticated Girl Power. Admittedly, they have lost that magnetic edge that previously tinged their performances but, this is not to say that they didn’t put on a sparking spectacle at the O2 Arena.

We managed to grab a few cheeky shots for those of you who missed it.
