MATT COSTA
Unfamiliar Faces : Brushfire Records/Universal
Released 14 January 2008 (Single-Mr Pitiful 7 January 2008)
Review by Peter Coulston
My introduction to Matt Costa was some months ago at the launch of the next Jack Johnson album, where he performed acoustic versions of two of the songs from this album. While enjoyable in their acoustic format, said songs can be heard to far better effect on this, his second album. It was produced by No Doubts Tom Dumont, who also produced his first, Songs We Sing. There is an ongoing sixties feel to this one, as it moves easily between Rock and Folk, with some brief encounters with jazz and bluegrass. Mostly its upbeat with Rock influences driving Mr Pitiful with keys and Lilacs and Emergency Call with guitars. Never Looking Back is the only pure acoustic guitar and harmonica number and the album closes with mandolins and banjos effectively driving the sparkly Miss Magnolia. In its darker places, the title track is a bit Sergeant Peppers, Bound has a good hook and Heart Of Stone makes more use of acoustic ideas. Traditional yet fresh, this album deserves a listen if you enjoy good songs, well performed on a tightly produced album that keeps you guessing. Another nice addition to my collection.
