Lightspeed Champion
Rough Trade, Bricklane
Review By Zarina Raja
I was not sure what to expect from Lightspeed Champion as I stood, tightly packed, into Brick Lanes tiny Rough Trade store. Recent press exposure had nudged me towards checking Mr Champion out for myself. I thought that - from looking at his ridiculously indie hairstyle, furry hat and drain pipe jeans I was about to witness something a wonderfully pretentious.
However, I did not. In fact, I was a little disappointed. Lightspeed Champion is all subtle Indie-based melodies, peppered with soft female backing vocals and tranquil violins, but not much more. From his appearance, you would expect something a little more unique and grabbing.
This is not to say that Lightpeed wasnt any good. He was. Its just that nothing particularly stood out. It is the kind of music that you would have on in the background, or the type of music that drifts through an open window in the summertime; a band that you cant quite remember the name of and forget about as you reach the ended of the street.
His music verges on sounding something Arcade Fire/Belle and Sebastian like, but he lacked the severity and passion of the Arcade Fire or the fragile yet deliciously catchy vocals of Belle and Sebastian.
Lightspeed Champion is certainly one to watch though. As he pointed out, he hadnt tried a lot of the songs live before or even played to a crowd that big. In terms of starting out, he did really well. I just didnt find that little something that I was looking for, but there is definitely room for potential.
