Yoav
93 Feet East, Thursday 24th Jan
Review By Zarina Raja
I dont know what to make of Yoav. The London paper (the source of all respectable knowledge) said he was: Fresh, raw and organic; edgy electro with the stutter of Hip-Hop beats. Really? Yes. No. I dont know?
I will admit that Yoav is fresh. He brought the crowd at 93 Feet East to a hushed stand still with his home made beats and fast plucking fingers.
In terms of originality, Yoav is winning the game. His sound centres on the bass heavy, danceable thuds, created by the tapping and smacking of his guitar. His music is definitely a provocative backlash to the bland crap that is currently circulating our air waves.
Edgy Electro no, Hip-Hop yes. The Israeli singer has successfully gleaned a Hip Hop vibe and covered it with vocals that glide through the songs like, uh, ducks? I am struggling, as you can see.
Basically, everyone at the gig loved it. Yoav received a crashing applaud smothered in whoops and cheers. Me, I had no feelings, one way or the other. His stuff is obviously good and certainly unique; it just didnt do it for me.
In the last few minutes, I have nervously wondered why I had just got major writers block. No words on music? There goes my job. But then, just now, I had a moment of clarity.
It was only a week ago that I saw my all time favourite band, Radiohead, at 93 Feet East. How can I compare something that means so little to me after I have been within three metres of Thom York? When you see something that absolutely blows you away, it is obviously going to take a hellava special act to even make it on to my radar. And Yoav didnt.
Make up your own mind and check out Yoav's MySpace.
