Interview by Katie Spain
DJ Krush is a cool looking character. At first glance, you wouldn’t know he’s a grandfather. Then again, most people also wouldn’t recognise him as one of the most influential Japanese Hip-Hop DJs and producers of all time. Well, now you know. Krush has come a long way since his early days as a young gang member in Tokyo. After finding his friend’s severed finger, the youngster turned away from the rough life and walked straight into the welcoming arms of mixing. The early eighties and cult Hip Hop film ‘Wild Style’ were a turning point, and after purchasing his first piece of equipment, Krush found himself in a world of turntables, live collaborations, Jazz and finally producing, re-mixing and recording on an international level.
We grabbed a rare chance to chat to the Hip-Hop legend before his London Koko gig. As we played translator tango we covered the old days, his first mixer, street culture and the person behind the mixer. Language differences aside, this is one man you could talk to for hours. Unfortunately, time isn’t something he has a lot of. Half an hour you’ll find, barely peels away the surface of a man whose talent has so many layers.
I know that you do a lot of interviews; you probably get asked the same questions all the time? Is there a question that you wish an interviewer would ask you?
I would like to be asked what I do outside of music; what my hobbies are.
Well what do you know - that was one of my questions! You are obviously immersed in music all the time. What do you do to relax?
I like to spend time with my family. I have just had a grandchild recently so spending time with the baby or other kids is nice. Or I like to spend time fishing or going to the sea-side and getting some fresh air.
Let’s talk music for a bit. You are back in the UK after having not played here for quite a while. Tell us what you have been up to in the mean time? I know your new DVD is coming out.
My time was occupied by touring world wide. I toured USA, South Africa and Asia including Korea and China and also Australia.
You are playing KOKO tomorrow. What can we expect?
I am going to play some brand new tracks, ones that I am making at the moment actually so they will be really, really fresh!
Do you like London?
London is a very essential city to my career; after Japan, my career started here. It is very important for me; it was my first door from Japan to the rest of the world. At that time, I was releasing a few albums in Japan already. But, since London has such a versatile music background, people were very open to my music.
Who do you admire most; either musically or just in life?
Grandmaster Flash made a strong impact on me.
When you were young, you used to be in a gang, I read that you found your friends severed finger on your desk. At the moment, London has some worrying elements of gang culture. Is that the case in Tokyo?
In Japan, because of the legal circumstances, it is much stricter. Those types of organisations are getting more underground. It is not coming to the surface; it is more organised than that. It is a different style to my time. Certain crimes cause problems for the ordinary people but you can’t see it like you can here. It is more complicated than before.
When you left gang life you found music. Some band members keep their first instrument. Do you still have your first piece of musical equipment?
I have kept my first mixer. It sits on a shelf!
If you weren’t in the music biz, what job do you think you would be doing now?
That’s a difficult question. I like to be creative so I might be a painter so I could express myself. I would prefer to be creative on my own and not in a big team. I feel lonely easily, but I do like to be alone.
What is your view for turntablism in 2008?
There are many young DJs coming up with some good skills now. They have a lot of equipment now too so I am expecting some young DJs to use the turntables more like instruments.
How did you first start making movie soundtracks?
For the first film, the track already existed. Afterwards, I began creating the tracks from scratch.
Which UK artist, if any, would you like to work with?
Because here there are many young generations of DJs, I will be taking some demos back with me and having a listen to the people that I might want to work with.
Do you have any plans for festivals in the summer?
A few places in France which need to be confirmed.
What is the most memorable concert you have been to as an audience member?
I actually find it hard to feel natural when I am at a concert. Even if I am in a club, listening to music, I think “I must go home immediately and write down my ideas!”
