Last week in London

by Peter Coulston

Before I forget, happy New Year and I trust that you all had a good break. As always, the holiday season dragged on ever longer with viruses and lack of public transport adding to the ever increasing reluctance of us all to return to the land of the living and working. It was virtually impossible to find a gig anywhere in London last week, but I did manage to break the ice at the 12 Bar Club on Thursday night. Due to last minute illness, they managed to stage only two acts, but very fine acts they were.

The first was the very competent Gregoryz Girl, currently a three piece electro/acoustic/pop band consisting of Leah Gregory on vocals, Tom Burden on lead guitar and Chris Guard on guitar and vocals. They are looking to add bass and drums, but certainly did themselves proud on Thursday in their current format. Leah has one of the best rock chick voices that I have heard in some time, with great control and a wide range. The songs were well constructed but not that easy to sing, but she was not deterred. Among many good ones were “What We Are”, “Welcome To Me”, “Moving Mountains” and the ballad “Before You”. This band, in whatever format, has real potential and I look forward to seeing them progress in 2008.

Symon James closed the evening with a short but classy set of original songs and covers that showcased his soulful vocals and brilliant, understated guitar. He gave his own interpretations of “Knocking On Heaven’s Door”, “Dock Of The Bay” and “Ain’t Nobody’s Business But Mine”, mixed with his own material, which was highlighted by songs written while living in Venezuela. I brilliant evening that was very laid back and served to prepare us for the busy times ahead, beginning this week when I shall be visiting the Bedford, Electroacoustic and Borderline (unless I change my mind and do something else entirely). In the meantime, stay safe and well and keep gigging in 2008.
