mobileAct Unsigned winners - Envy and Other Sins

After having spent various Saturday (and Sundays - I never managed to work out which was the repeat and which was the new episode) afternoons watching T4’s mobileAct Unsigned, getting angry with Blur’s Alex James boring arrogance and irritating remarks (you may have been in one of the greatest bands of the 90s but you cannot get away with that hair cut any more) I was happy to see that the public eventually choose one of the better bands to win.

Personally, Hijak Oscar were my favourite but I can see the alluring qualities of Envy and Other Sins. I also liked The Mentalists simply because they pissed the judges off and, despite the judges saying ‘it had been done before,’ I thought they were loud, colourful and generally one of the most original bands on the programme.

Anyway, let’s focus on the winners, Envy & Other Sins. They beat Indie boys Revenue, the Birmingham-based band - and Lily Allen’s favourites - in the live final on 23rd December. I think it all went wrong after the lead singer wore that weird goldy-green, shoulder-padded jacket; not a good look – stick to the tight leather ones.

Envy & Other Sins walked away with a record deal from A&M Records, headed by Mobile Act judge Simon Gavin. They were announced winners at Riverside Studios, Hammersmith, after an online public vote deemed them the best unsigned band in Britain. Alongside Simon Gavin, the judging panel comprised Radio 1’s Jo Whiley and Blur’s Alex James.

Following their triumph, Envy & Other Sins will introduce the world to their unique brand of ‘furniture rock’ via self-penned single, Highness, due for release on 11th February 2008. The single was recorded at Olympic Studios, where the band is currently working on their debut album, which will be released on 3rd March.

Jarvey Moss, Envy & Other Sins pianist, came up with this natty little sound bite: “This is the dawning of the age of furniture rock – we never expected our big break to be on a reality show; we’ve always been about making music and now we’ve got the chance to do it on a bigger stage.”

"envy & other sins - unique" ??? theyre not that needs no arguement. unfortunatly there is countless talentless crap like that. please get some judges and people to right reviews who actually know what they are talking about, and find music other than that which they have already seen on tv or whatever crap that happenens to appear on the show thats been dragged from the bottom of the underground barrel. i just know it wont be worth the 30minutes of my time on a saturday or sunday, until the music industry can actually try putting music first for a change this show, and the industry is forever doomed. once again a potentially good oppertunity for music itself, and a good tv show was ruined by some stupid fat cats who surely should have been able to realise what a mistake they made, somehow i doubt they like the band chosen as the winner, and if they actually do, they need to be replaced. im so glad for underground music, because what i see on tv constantly disapoints me. hijack oscar were unique, live, they really were somthing to listen to and enjoy, unfortunatly as usual, they dont have the kind of poppy sound that will ever impress the judges on the show, despite being the only band any one with a remotely good music taste would ever talk about positively.

Envy and Other Sins are a unique and brilliant band, They were by far the best band on the show. The other bands in my view just made a noise, I started watching to see how awful they were reading my book while they played! But I stopped, sat up and listened when I heard 'Envy & Other Sins' play for the first time, each time I hear them I love them more, they are just so good. Listen to their Album and I am sure you will agree. (Hijak Oscar were quite interesting, and my second favourite) I dont usually vote for anyone in any TV program, but with E&OS I loved them so much that I did make the effort to vote every day
