James Blunt
Hammersmith Apollo
14th January 2007
Review by Katie Spain
It's not often you hot foot it from a potential musical all-nighter in Camden (Brit Award nomination party) to a James Blunt concert in Hammersmith.
As we sit on urine-soaked steps, eating gourmet salad and suppressing the effects of cheap red wine, we can't help ponder the sanity of our decision. One forty minute loo queue later and I'm ready to demand a refund. But hey, James Blunt deserves a shot. I've always hated the public's Blunt stereotypes, boring references and media tales of beautiful bedtime conquests. Hey, if you were famous - you'd go there too. So, it was with an open mind I tackled the Hammersmith Apollo. Unfortunately, we left early.
Before you jump to conclusions, I'm not about to knock an artist who released one of the bestselling albums of this century. 'Back to Bedlam' hit the hearts (and groins) of the nation. He followed this up with 'All The Lost Souls'; an album which has already sold over three million copies (and counting). One can't help wonder who buys the bloody things. Face it... a large majority of you must. It seems that most just won't admit to it.
I'm no raving fan, but I'm partial to the odd Blunt tune... I don't own the albums but there's a a soft spot there somewhere. Last night, I hoped he'd hit it. My lad did too (you can never have enough help in the bedroom).
It turns out however, that the live James Blunt experience isn't for me. Maybe we were too far back from the stage, maybe we weren't in the mood or maybe the consistently slow songs just didn't complement my pounding headache. The fans however, seemed to love him - and that, I guess, is all that matters.
As a dressed-down Blunt launched into his set, couples held each other in collective 'moments'. The man has a fine voice - as clear as it is unique but throughout the singer's warbling tales of love, sex and drugs my migraine grew stronger. The set was simple - backdrops literally fell from the scaffolding as each song came to a close and five songs in, we departed. Not much of a review then... but for this little punter, it wasn't much of a gig. I'll keep playing his tunes (even Army lads have feelings too).
I'm told that 'You're Beautiful' lived up to its name. So too did my warm bed.
If you were at the gig and a headache wasn't an issue, I'd love to hear about it. Reveal all in the comments section...
