New Single: Aah ooh
Skibunny

Review By Zarina Raja

If you haven’t heard of Skibunny, then let me introduce you. First came the legend of Skibunny the club; two musicians, Mark and Tanya, with four Peel Sessions and a Melody Maker Single of the Week under their belts, came together as a DJ duo to create Skibunny, a weekly Saturday night alternative club which soon prompted words like 'groundbreaking' from Radio 1. As the reputation grew, the accolades kept coming with both a Club of the Week appearance in the pages of the NME, and a gong for Best Alternative Club at the Oh Yeah Awards.

Skibunny the club continues to attract a sell-out crowd every week. The music policy remains the same – if it’s good, play it. So you are just as likely to hear The Cure as you are Jamie Lidell, Aretha Franklyn, Ratatat and A-Track.

January 2008 finally sees the first release of original material. Sitting somewhere between Joy Division, Fourtet and The Cure, it’s a bittersweet slice of Electro-Acoustic Pop, the vocals being recorded with David Holmes. The B-Side is a remix from new friend Handsomeboy Technique, from Japan’s Second Royal Records.

Aah ooh stumbles to life after a stuttering beginning, with a prominent beat that steadily gains speed through the song. A subtle electronic vibe spills out from Aah ooh, making it a deliciously danceable yet sublimely tranquil song.

Its light melancholic undertones send you off into a beckoning world of dreams, enticed by the echoing Aah oohs that wonder through the single like a broken hearted ghost.

It is an immediately likeable song that grabs your attention within seconds. It makes you want to lie down in field on a summers day and smoke rollies while contemplating your twitching existential thoughts.

Saying this, it is not in any way slow or cheesy. It reaches out for the side of you that is begging to be teased by a waft of calming Aah oohs and glittering danceable beats.

Aah ooh is the perfect song to listen to (and up very loud) be it in a club, alone in your bedroom or while roaming down the street on a horrendously cold morning or a sunshine soaked afternoon.

You will be hard pushed to find fault in Skibunny’s dazzling new single.

Release Date: 28/01/08
