Go:Audio “Woodchuck” EP

You may have come across Go:Audio in the past few months supporting a pretty impressive range of upcoming indie bands, and with a full tour planned for later this year I am sure we will be hearing far more from them. This, their debut EP is an impressive first offering from the unconventional 4 piece that whilst not entirely groundbreaking in its achievements provides a happy antidote to some of the skinny jean clad indie rock propagating the current music scene.
Without wishing to pigeonhole the band, but rather to create a musical backdrop from which it may be useful to view them, certain worthy comparisons can be made to a range of notable bands. Perhaps these bands don’t sit at the current forefront of the new music scene but names such as Fountains of Wayne and Jimmy Eat World despite having their hey day a few years back are certainly not bad comparisons to be drawn for a debut EP.
The short and sweet pop orientated tracks with their dreamy synth based melodies, chunky guitar riffs, euphoric sing along choruses and tales of young heartache should still resonate happily with today’s music scene. The first and title track of the EP “Woodchuck” is a particularly catchy little number, a more upbeat offering than the rest of the EP, it wastes no time dropping into its sing-a-long chorus with synthesizers blazing a happy melody to the backdrop of the poppy punk guitar riffs. The vocals do perhaps start to repeat themselves too much towards the end but just as that becomes apparent the song is over leaving me wanting more.
The rest of EP fails to quite recreate that assured pop rock balance, but demonstrates effectively some further facets of the bands sound. “Forget About It” whilst falling short of a being labelled a ballad is certainly a slower affair with less guitars and more focus on the song writing and vocal talents of James Mathews and a well produced electro/pop backing. Throughout the rest of the EP the band consistently demonstrate their musical and songwriting abilities, whilst not revolutionary in their approach they are certainly a well crafted bunch of songs, produced to a high standard and offering much promise for the future.
