MATT KEBBELL
Skinny Dip
Tramps and Bums Records
By Peter Coulston
I first heard Matt Kebbell at the Electroacoustic Club last year when he held a one week residency there. I was impressed with his songs and performance and was glad to hear that he now has an album available. Matt works closely with Anna Webster, Label Manager of Hooked Up Records, which has many fine artists that feature regularly at the Electroacoustic due to Annas links with the club.
I originally compared Matts songs to Ryan Adams Love Is Hell period and would not disagree with those reviewers who can see the influence of Leonard Cohen. Springsteens acoustic forays figure in the equation also, particularly Nebraska. From this you have probably concluded that Matt Kebbell is into beautifully sensitive acoustic songs presented simply. There is the odd harmonica and violin used to good effect, but, for the most part its Matt and his songs. Most of them are slow, melodic and atmospheric in a folky style. For those looking for lighter material, its here in the slightly more pop influenced In The End and the darker Back Home. I particularly liked Right and Wrong and Got It Wrong on the first listen, but the other songs will grow on you with each listen. This is an album that you can listen to repeatedly and still keep finding good stuff.
