Robots in Disguise
We're in the Music Biz
Review by Zarina Raja
Were in the Music Biz is the first song on Robots in Disguises third album. Absolutely no talent, the most unsuccessful duo the UK has ever known, they sing in a melodic, mocking manner, teasing the music press with a deliberate f*** you, portraying that any negative comments made about them simply bounce off of them and fire RID up.
A heavily poppy intro to Were in the Music Biz continues through to the second track, Cant Stop Getting Wasted; a shouty girl anthem that reeks of weekday binges and weekend hangovers. Its fast singing and pumping drums make you feel like the Robots are spinning you round on a dance floor and twisting you out of control.
The Sex Has Made me Stupid is definitely one of the best tracks on the album. It still has a strong, poppy, electro vibe to it but its cut with a slightly cooler edge like Turn It Up (Get RID) and Cycle Song ( Disguises).
This continues into Animals, a funky song with clattering drums and spiky guitars that smoother Dee and Sues melodic vocals, Im an animal, youre an animal. Animal, are you fit for the kill.
By the middle of Were in the Music Biz, RID have completely shrugged off the young, poppy vibe that was prominent in the first two songs. They land back on safe ground with The Tears, a slower song that paves the way for the brilliant I Dont Have A God; an almost melancholic Robots song that shows off a more serious side to RID. I dont have a God, I dont have a judge, its a faithless world and I need saving. This makes for a brilliant contrast to songs like Cant Stop Getting Wasted with lyrics like, Look at me crashed down, face down in sick. Talk about lyrics that tell it how it is.
I Live in Berlin comes in second best to The Sex Has made Me Stupid. Its thick drums ooze out through the song with scratchy guitars that funk up the swirling vocals I live in Beeeeerlin.
Im Hit brings backs the party vibe to Were in the Music Biz. Its laden with screechy/screamy lyrics and thudding drums. This rolls into Everbodys Going Crazy, another fast song that taps its way into your brain and hangs around all day; a guaranteed hit at an RID gig.
Dont Copy Me ends Were in the Music Biz on a light hearted note that wraps RID up. Whys youre hair cut by the council? they sing, are you wearing youre whole badge collection out tonight? That must have taken a while to pen. Saying this, its a great way to finish an album that tumbles from ridiculously poppy songs into slower yet still havoc-creating tunes, and then back to lashings of irresistible pop.
Buy the album, turn it up, lie down, stand up, jump around or dance about.
