COMPETITION: Win two Portishead Tickets

Portishead

This competition has now closed.

To see in February, we have another great competition. We have two Portishead tickets up for grabs for their Hammersmith Apollo gig, April 14th.

Portishead are one of the best things that tumbled out of the 90s. Forget Blur, Rave and Take That.

They created an intense sound, unique and inspiring, alluring and wonderfully mesmerizing. They Trip-Hopped their way to success, blasting us with swirling beats and smatterings of jarring vocals, provided by the incredible Beth Gibbons.

The Bristol based band released their debut album, Dummy, in ‘94 which paved the way for their spectacular Hip-Hop, experimental sound. Dummy featured Portishead classics like Wondering Star and Numb.

A second album followed in ’97 and a live album, Roseland NYC Live , in ’98.

For the last ten years, Portishead drifted, pursuing solo careers and occasionally adding new MySpace tracks. In December 2007, they headlined All Tomorrows Parties, playing their first full sets in nearly ten years.

With their third studio album - funnily enough named Third - on the brink of release, Portishead have scheduled a small UK tour in Manchester, London, Wolverhampton and Edinburgh.

We have two tickets up for grabs for Portishead at the Hammersmith Apollo, on April 10th, at 7pm.

To enter our competition, please tell us which three gigs you are looking forward to and why in 2008. Please leave your comments below. The winner will be picked at random and notified by email.

Not sure what’s going on in 2008? Then check out Seatwave’s listings.

Smashing Pumpkins, because i've loved them for ages. Their set at Reading was mind blowing even if i would of prefered the original line up.. I was a cub scout, i worked with the drummers cousin and their one of my girlfriend fave bands! Reading festival, to many bands to mention, no doubt.. Not much has been released yet, but if the Green Day roumor is true, im looking forward to them again. Getting the kids up on stage is always a good laugh. Cheers Simon

Dj Shadow and Cut Chemist at the Roundhouse in their only UK gig for the Hard Sell tour. This is what turntablism is all about. Public Enemy are coming to Brixton, that is definitely a hotly anticipated gig! And the third? Not so much a gig, but DMZ at Mass on the 1st of March. A dubstep line up to die for.

Firstly I'm looking forward to My Bloody Valentine mid-year, because I never imagined I'd get a chance to see them play live. Second is The Cure, because they're still my all-time favourite, even if Robert Smith is old and fat now. And last and most is the Roskilde Festival, because Radiohead are headlining and it's where I met my lovely wee Scottish girlfriend last year, so it'll be a very special occasion indeed.

I'm looking forward to Kylie Minogue, she is fantastic and has created a whole new sound for herself without trying too hard (think madonna); concert should be a blast. Queens of the Stone Age, sex on legs and a proper band band! Muse, the best band on the planet, stunning gigs, music as good as sex - really, they're that good! Great year ahead, can't wait. x

Björk - because her music has been with me since I was a teen, and being able to see her live as a tween means I can cross it out on my 'things to do before it is too late'- list. I have huge expectations. Radiohead - I still can't believe I have tickets. Come storm, come university failure. I have Radiohead tickets! Explosions In The Sky - can I add it even though I already went? It was my birthday, I had my good friend right next to me, and the music simply blew me away. It was perfect.

Bjork - After seeing her in iceland a few years back i want to see if she lives up to her performance in the uk. 65 days of static - A small band but again i would love to see if the pull off there tracks live. Explosions in the sky - although this was 2 weeks ago i looked forward to that gig for months and it was well worth waiting for!

Reel Big Fish in a couple of weeks!! Because they are unbelievable live and they have so much energy. Sonic Boom 6 because I have seen them before a few times and their gigs are always a lot of fun Reading Festival... because it has to be said and it has to be done and it's always the best weekend of the summer.

Well, the first gig I'm looking forward to is Portishead because they are by far the most original band of the 90s. They were what the decade needed to balance out all the boy band music. They rock! Then it would have to be Neil Young cos he is one of the titans of rock history, and then my friend Jay's gig cos he's the Dylan of the 21st Century.
Posted on February 12, 2008 11:45 AM

The Cure in April will most certainly be a highlight, although I'd have given anything to have seen them in both the 'Pornography' and 'Disintegration' eras. I'm also looking forward to see Down play in Amsterdam and then Brixton the following week. Musically unlike the rest of the gigs mentioned above, Anaal Nathrakh at the Camden Underworld in May is set to be amazing; another band, like Portishead and The Cure, who seldom tour!

The mars Volta in march@brixton - i hear they do an awesome show, cant wait until the Broken Social Scene gig in Ireland, i haven’t heard a band that is so varied and atmospheric in a very long time......Portishead would be a great third to top it off??! :)

Black and Dekka, got to be one to watch. The great feeling I have everytime I come away from their gigs. Street Quartet, amazing group, Portishead style with another unique vocals. And lastly I am waiting to see if Green Bags are taking to the stage agin, their stage shows make for an all round experience well worth the wait for a new show.

Roni Size, Omar and Bjork. I saw Roni Size's gig as Reprazent. Their parformance was amazing. Omar has brilliant voice and unnecessary to say about Bjork! No music, No life!

I'm most looking forward to going to reading this year, as it'll be the first time i've ever been to a festival, but the bands i'm most looking forward to(assuming i can get tickets) are bjórk, radiohead and portishead; bjórk, because she's trippy and has a brilliant energy to her performance; radiohead, because i've been meaning to see them for years; and portishead, because i only just got into them and would be cool to be there for their big revival thing!
Posted on February 16, 2008 7:08 PM

Rowan Paterson
Neil Young at the Hammersmith Apollo - it's the trifecta - acoustic, Crazy Horse and also his wife Pegi. I'm also totally hopelessly looking forward to seeing Kimya Dawson, Cat Power and Regina Spektor perform together at the Glasgow Barrowlands, which if anyone's reading, would be a pretty perfect night (except that its imaginary). And this year I also wanna see Devendra Bernhardt anywhere that he's playing in the UK. Mostly because he's a rockin' ole weirdo.
Posted on February 17, 2008 7:09 AM

I am looking forward to Every Time I Die in London, A Life Once Lost in Birmingham, and Download festival...I need to go to a gig that isn't tragically metal!

What about the Wriggles in France, Kispal es a borz at the Sziget and The Rapture wherever I can watch them?

I am most looking forward to Radiohead because other than Portishead they're the most beautiful and influential band of our era. Roisin Murphy is another one I am looking forward to because not only is she stunning and ginge ! (Go ginge's) Her music is uplifting and its just what this world needs. And UNKLE because I haven't seen them yet and I have been a fan for YEARS. Can't wait to see them live.

Well, Radiohead, obviously. I absolutely can not wait to hear In Rainbows performed live, and even better it's just up the road to me, appealing to my laziness. Elbow's return is also pretty exciting as they're responsible for one of my favourite gigs of all time (Somerset House 2006) and their song "Crawling With Idiot" has become the unofficial soundtrack to my life. Finally, Reading festival, especially if the rumours are true and Rage Against The Machine have been booked.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy Radiohead, only flippin Radiohead in June...was drooling as I watched the 93 Feet East gig live online, every note of the perfect In Rainbows is etched into my consciousness...bring it on baby. Moderately excited about Hot Chip next week, gonna have me a boogie with ma buddies, and Shlomo/Yoda is gonna rock da House on the South Bank this Friday - is it possible to chin stroke and beat box at the same time...Oh, and did I mention I have Radiohead tickets?
Posted on February 21, 2008 5:23 PM

I dont have to mention the fact that I LOVE their music, right? 1) Portishead, because I am their most loyal devotee and have been aching for their new release, 2) Bjork, because she is the goddess of electronic music and everyone should see her perform at least once in a life time and leave a different person, 3) Radiohead, because everything they do is an audio feast for the soul, its the ultimate gig!

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, because I've been a fan since I was a kid but never got a chance to see them before now. Bjork, because she puts on a great show and as it's at the Apollo you wont be too far away from the action! Finally, of course Portishead, I am really looking forward to hearing the new album and the only thing better would be seeing them live.

DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist, UNKLE, and PORTISHEAD! I managed to get in quick enough for tickets for the first two, but Portishead sold out too quickly. I can't afford the amount of cash ebay are charging, but Portishead are literally my favourite band ever. Beth Gibbons live must be incredible. Plus it's on my birthday! :)

Another thing, the event is not much advertised so I’m just wondering how they gonna make it ;) 3.Portished - I’m still amazed when dummy is on :D xxx

Being from Brazil where the gigs are scarce, and now living in london, I need to see live two incredible bands that mean so much to me (and they rhyme): portishead and radiohead. Also looking forward to my bloody valentine, a lovely surprise.

I am looking forward to Bjork in April as she is awesome, and it will be a very good show. She doesn't play too often so definately not one to miss. Also really want to see Portishead, looking forward to the new album coming out. Would love to see them especially as there would seem to be a bit of a Bristol scene renaissance. A very unique era in music, and certainly one that should be welcomed back. Final gig looking forward to this year is Aphex Twin at Bestival. This festival is fantastic anyway, but with a headliner such as Aphex Twin, it should make for a very unique show, and the atmosphere will be incredible. These three artists being my absolute favourites and can't believe that all playing within a year, a very good year for live music.

Radiohead because there's no better band in the world. I've been waiting 10 years for this! Bjork is brilliant live. I saw her in NYC about 12 years ago--amazing! And of course Portishead. I've been a fan for a *long* time.

Halil Gurhanli
1. Radiohead, of course! Beside the fact that they rarely give concert especially compared to other similar (but not the same quality) bands, their live sound is so perfect as if it has been recorded in studio. 2. Portishead. I simply can't think of any single more impressive vocal on earth! Also, I'm bored to remain excited/sad while listening their live concert records; I want to be there this time!! 3. Bjork. She makes the unique kind of music which can still make me dance even though I use to consider the people who dance instead of just listen as weird... I guess she can make me forget, at least for a while, the fact that I'm getting older.

I am looking forward to seeing Nick Cave, because he is a musical genious... Prodigy because it has been a long time coming, and they know how to rock the house... And i am looking forward to seeing Mars Volta, because they are almost experimental rock gods who have created their own original style of rock!

Radiohead in Victoria Park has the potential to put all others to shame. Portishead would be unbelievable, never having seen them but been into them for so long! Seminal stuff! For a third one, I'm keeping that one open for Jacko!

Portishead - so I can bask in a pure unadulterated wave of emotion Converge - Seeing my favorite band perform one of there notoriously intense shows a year on from last time I saw them is only just short of a miracle. Sigur Ros - Not even sure if they are playing england any tiem this year, but I certainly hope they are and that I get to see them. This band to me just sound completely gorgeous and comfortable like wearing a new jumper for the first time. They feel like the most gentle sleep you can imagine. And seeing them live I can imagine to be so much more immersive.
Posted on March 1, 2008 2:42 PM

Portishead - cos they are one of he best bads I've ever seen and I want to see them again. Fat Freddy's Drop for their styly pacific beats and Radiohead because life was never meant to be easy.

Portishead, absolutely. Dummy has been one of my top ten albums for as long as I can remember. Me and the girlfriend will be going to see Paul Weller for the 4th time later this year, and also looking forward to the live Mighty Boosh show. It's gonna be a good year...

Portishead, dummy! Would love to see them at the Apollo or up in Edinburgh. Wouldn't it be neat if they combined talents with Radiohead --- a metatrippy bi-band.

I'm soooo looking forward to Portishead. 'Dummy' still sounds as good now as when it was released. Can't believe they're back. Also, Bjork as she seldom tours and finally The Infadels. They always rock!

I am looking forward to the Foo Fighters in Wembley in June because I've not seen them before and I'm going with my mum who is a big fan! I am also looking forward to seeing Portishead in April as I have not seen them before either and have been waiting 10 years to see them live. If I win these tickets, I will give my original tickets to a few mates. I am also lookng forward to seeing Roni Size, as it will be a great dance-off for me and my mate!

Arctic Monkeys - coz over there, there's broken bones and only music so that there's new ring tones... New Young Pony Club - the best girls in town and the most glam sound since Blondie Adele - She says it like it is, very sharp lady and what a voice

Foo Fighters - what if Kurt Cobain was still here? I don't think Foo Fighters would be in their magnificence, but what would Nirvana have become?.... Massive Attack - the best live band I'd say. The Breeders - maybe it shows my age!

I'm really looking forward to seeing Portishead in London and Massive Attack in Istanbul over the summer. As these two bands really defined a couple of years of my life. Finally I would love to see Radiohead play their new album which I haven't had a chance to obsess over as I have their previous ones.

It has to be Morcheeba, Alabama 3(as they have Misty in Roots supporting) and of course, Portishead. I've moved back to the UK after 6 years in NY and my life is all coming together, it's recycling all the good people I've met over the years. Morcheeba, Portishead and Misty in Roots have been major players through the good and the bad and it would be perfection to be able to see them all within a matter of months.

Masive Attack in the summer, and definitely Portishead who are top on my 'die to see' list. Gogol Bordello should also fire up Brixton Academy in true gypsy spirit next week.

Radiohead at Victoria Park should be fab. Lightspeed Champion at Koko should bring Camden to it's knees and Reuben are going to tear up the Electric Ballroom

I'm really excited about seeing Muse at V, as they are incredible live and seeing The Verve playing together again after a long time and also seeing the Keiser Chiefs as they have so much energy!!

Well, Clearly Portishead would be top billing. The new album is a fresh new side to them that could only be complemented by a live show! Radiohead would be up there for their sheer creative shove in the right direction for good music. Followed closely by Feist who I've tried to catch for the last 3 years and constantly miss.

Portishead, clearly, gutted i missed out on tickets before they sold out. Radiohead at vic park, an important band to see before you die and i've never seen them as in the folly of my youth i stupidly went to see annother band the only chance i had! Average White Band at the Jazz Cafe with my dad, treat day.

Hopefully 1 of them will be Portishead @ Brixton :).... Looking forward to seeing N*E*R*D at Brixton Academy in June as they always put on a great show! They were awesome last time i saw them. Mr Scruff at Beach breaks live festival should be amazing not only musically but the scenery of being on a sunny beach in Cornwall will be great! Hopefully (if i can stretch to a ticket) i will be seeing Queens of The Stoneage at Reading (along with the rest of the amazing line-up) I Love Them!! But Portishead would be the greatest gig ever especially at my fav venue! XXXX

Not seen Moz at a festival before so looking forward to this and the atmosphere very much. Features New York Dolls and Dirty Pretty Things who I have check-out before, but only music wise so be interested in seeing the live and having a cracking night. Foo Fighters Wembley - First time seeing the new Wembley in person and the Foo Fighers WILL tear it back down again!
